Today marks the anniversary of Leonard Bernstein’s May 9, 1988 premiere of Arias and Barcarolles, performed at the Equitable Center Auditorium in New York City. After playing Mozart and Gershwin at the White House in 1960, President Eisenhower greeted Mr. Bernstein and said, You know, I liked that last piece you played; its got a theme. I like music with a theme, not all them arias and barcarolles. Bernstein was so taken by President Eisenhower’s remark that 30 years later, he produced a song-cycle called Arias and Barcarolles, with a theme Bernstein described as “The politics of love.” We hope that this marvelous clip makes for a great start to your weekend! https://soundcloud/lbsocialmedia/arias-barcarolles-love-duet-clip
