Today marks the anniversary of the CIA-backed assassination of Burkina Fasos President Thomas Sankara. Within four years, Sankara transformed Burkina Faso from a poor country Neo-colonial nation, dependent on Western imperialism, to an economically independent and socially progressive nation. By redistributing land from the feudal landlords who sided with Imperialism and giving it directly to local peasants revolution in rural areas made leaps in social relations. Sankara nationalized oil wealth and used the money to double school attendance and half infant mortality. Sankaras feminist policies propelled women into the forefront of the struggle in a patriarchal neo-colonial society, unleashing women as a mighty force for the revolution.
