Today, my client asked me who is my idol in weightlifting. I am not the person that idolises others. I strongly believe that everyone should be focusing on themselves and their personal development, striving to become the best version of themselves, and what their DNA had destined them to. However, there is this one lifter I do look up to and I am greatly inspired from: Pyrros Dimas. 4 x Olympic Champion, with 3 gold and a bronze medal, multiple times world record holder and one of the most decorated athletes ever in the sport. But it is not his achievements and his laurels that make me respect him so much. Its his mindset. PURE WINNER. Even when the bar seemed that would crush him, like in this clean and jerk, in the video during Sydney olympics in 2000, he still somehow found the strength to come up from such a disadvantaged push jerk position and make the lift. A lift that gave him his 3rd gold olympic medal, placing him in the pantheon of one of the four weightlifters holding 3 gold olympic medals medals alongside Kakhiashvili, Mutlu and Suleimanoglu: https://youtube/watch?v=xlD7KmiNBaE It is this mental strength that inspires me. His form was definitely not flawless. Probably one of the worst cleans of his career in terms of technique. Probably the best in terms of outcome. - Yes training the form is important, especially to minimise the risk of injury, as well as to increase the efficiency of the lift and to not waste extra ATP. - Yes training for strength is important too, after all it is a strength sport. But NEITHER perfect form, NOR impressive strength wins the medal. It is this STRONG MINDSET, this mentality that I will make the lift no matter what that wins it. And not many people have this... You notice these athletes when they come on the platform to lift. Their eyes are electrifying, and you can just tell by the way they look at the bar that they have stepped on the platform for one reason, and only that. TO WIN.
