Today, my favorite blogger -- Bob Lefsetz, who writes about the music industry -- posted this great line: “Just because the barrier to entry is low, that does not mean the winners have no talent, have paid no dues.” That, to me, describes so many industries -- and, especially, the one of professional speaking. We have so many who are influenced to join the ranks of speakers through a sales pitch from a boot camp, coach, or training program...and, sadly, they often presume because it is an easy business to enter that also means it is an easy one in which to succeed. Nothing could be further from the truth. Just as in any other field that requires artistry -- from singer to surgeon -- those with a particular talent for the craft who are willing to pay their dues and work exceeedingly hard to apply their ability are the ones who most frequently succeed. Those who believe they can enroll in a platform course...or a weekend training camp...or any other short term effort...are the ones who, at the very least, have been sadly misinformed. Perhaps...they’ve even been deceived -- either by unscrupulous hucksters or by their own ego and naive attitude.
