Today, news in The Times and the Daily Mail has discussed a gene mutation than can give women who inherit it a one in three chance of developing breast cancer by the age of 70. The news stories are based on research released today in the New England Journal of Medicine about the connection between mutations in the gene PALB2 and breast cancer risk. PALB2 mutations were already known to increase breast cancer risk, but today’s research, from the University of Cambridge, shows that mutations in the gene may have a stronger influence on breast cancer risk than previously thought.
