Today one hundred years ago the British began the blockade of German ports even though war between the two had not been declared. The British would restrict American ships sailing for Hamburg, threatened to sink American ships if they disregarded the blocked and made American ships and other neutrals stop at British ports to be inspected where contraband. including food, was seized and used by the British. The blockade had two results: 450,000 German women, children and elderly died from hunger during the five-year war; and Germany retaliated with submarine warfare. Retaliated. Britain blockaded Germany first. Germany declared a quarantine area around Britain. Famously, the Lusitania, carrying war supplies to Britain, was well warned, but went through the area and was sunk, as had been sunk scores of Germany ships by the British during their blockade of the German harbors.
