Today one of the most extraordinary musicians was born: Giacomo - TopicsExpress

Today one of the most extraordinary musicians was born: Giacomo Puccini ( 1858-1924). Like most professional composers in Italy before him, he spent his entire childhood receiving specialist musical training. (...). The Italian traditions embodied in the curriculum at Lucca were very conservative. They remained firmly wedded to the pratical thorough bass rules of the Neapolitan partimento method, notwithstanding the influence of the Ramellian notions of chord root and inversion. Prolonged and rigorous training in a species of harmony and counterpoint, differing profoundly from modern notions of these disciplines was regarded as an essential prerequisite from composition. (...) Elementary student exercises of the sort recommended in old books of regole were rarely considered worthy of preservation within conservatory archives. (...). It is possible to find evidence of Puccinis training in the partimento tradition within the music of his operas. He appears to have drawn inspiration from even the most basic pedagogical exercises.
