Today, right next to my office at the Menorah Medical Center Medical Park, three people were shot and killed at two different Jewish community facilities. While we dont know the motive for sure yet, it occurred to me that these senseless acts of violence often occur out of hatred for others that are different than us. It is my opinion that human nature is by nature good, and that feelings of hatred of others has to be taught. One of my favorite musicals, South Pacific, has a song that says it best. Youve got to be taught To hate and fear, Youve got to be taught From year to year, Its got to be drummed In your dear little ear Youve got to be carefully taught. Youve got to be taught to be afraid Of people whose eyes are oddly made, And people whose skin is a diffrent shade, Youve got to be carefully taught. Youve got to be taught before its too late, Before you are six or seven or eight, To hate all the people your relatives hate, Youve got to be carefully taught!! Hatred is learned.
