Today saw the Sumner Chairmans Cup side travel to Hornby with a place in the final on the line. Sumner was asked to bat first on a very dry wicket and the nature of the wicket meant runs were hard to come by freely. Sumner managed to get through to 139/9 from their 40 overs thanks largely to an impressive 61 from Dave McConnell. Dave was ably supported by Paul Russell through the middle stages. In reply Tom Gooday and Andrew Bird started tidy with Birdy claiming two early wickets. From here some wayward bowling and useful batting saw Hornby through to 70/3 at drinks (20 overs). With a final at stake the Sumner boys rolled up their sleeves and got down into the trenches to battle out the remaining overs. Captain Marcus Thompson bowled through the middle stages and claimed 3-14 off his 8. Birdy and Tommy came back and bowled out their overs picking up 3 further wickets and with 8 overs remaining Hornby required 30 odd runs with two wickets in hand. Bird 3-9, Gooday 2-22. Nick Ward and Ferg Gunn were entrusted with the role of bowling the final 8 overs after having been inconsistent in their first spells. Fergs second spell was much more controlled and applied pressure. Wardy had been inconsistent in his first spell but held his nerve second time around and created chances. A botched caught and bowled attempt from Ward eventually lead to a direct hit run out from sub fielder Jonny Pistol Percasky and had Sumner one wicket from victory. After a few nervous overs Ward provided the delivery that enduced a skyed ball into the covers and Russ completed a useful catch to seal a determined 17 run victory for the team in Blue. A finals date now awaits the boys in late January against our old foes Heathcote, the opposition we have met in two of our three previous Chairmans Cup successes. GTB!
