Today, the 19th July 2014 marks the 51st anniversary of the passing of Annie Gertrude Findlay “Gertrude”, the devoted wife of James Arthur Findlay. Gertrude died here at Stansted Hall of a heart failure. She was 82 years old. Yesterday we unveiled a beautiful granite bench for her which stands in pride of place beside the new Granite Memorial for Arthur Findlay. Arthur died before he could conclude the arrangements for his wife’s memorial so it was a great pleasure to unveil the granite bench for Gertrude as a tribute from her husband Arthur Findlay. A beautiful painting of Gertrude hangs in the Lecture Room at the college. Gertrude was a kind and generous lady and devoted to her husband and Family. She was a dedicated supported of the Red Cross and tirelessly raised funds to support their work. She was very devoted to her husband Arthur Findlay and supported him with his work for Spiritualism and attentively did the proof reading for all of his books. She also gave Arthur his first book on the subject of Spiritualism. She managed Stansted Hall and was a strong lady who had a great eye for detail. She was instrumental in bringing much of the furniture to Stansted Hall that you enjoy sitting on and admiring today, especially in the long gallery. Gertrude is buried in the St Mary’s Church, beside her husband Arthur Findlay. Their graves are adorned with lit candles and tribute flowers as a mark of love and thanks for their precious generosity to us all and for their love for Spiritualism. WITH MUCH LOVE TO ANNIE GERTRUDE FINDLAY…….
