Today, the Catholic Church remembers Saint Angela Merici, - TopicsExpress

Today, the Catholic Church remembers Saint Angela Merici, foundress of the first secular institute. She lived in the time of Christopher Columbus, and the idea was a new one. Secular institutes are now an officially recognized form of consecrated life in the Catholic Church. Unlike religious sisters, priests, and brothers, members do not live in community and share all things in common. Instead, they support themselves individually but promise to live in celibacy in order to serve others; to live simply rather than in pursuit of material things; and to dedicate themselves to doing the will of God in order to be light and leaven in the world.
