Today the Heritage Page happily celebrates the 80th Wedding Anniversary of Alfred Bertram Preston & Eva Clementine Miller. They were joined together in Holy Matrimony on this day in 1934 in Piedmont, West Virginia by Cecil Carter. Alf, as he was known by all, was born in Barton in 1914 to Charles David “Ty” Preston & Amy Ellen Metz. Eva, born in Stoney Run, also in 1914, was the daughter of Lonnison Carl Miller & Clara Victoria Ross. After the ceremony they began their married life together in a home in Dogwood Flat just outside of town. He worked in the mines to pay the rent while Eva took on the chore of providing a home life as soon afterwards the first of their 8 children were born. He later managed to land a better paying job to support his ever growing family at the Luke, Maryland paper mill where he worked the remainder of his life. Only a world war could ever separate the young couple and that came to pass in June of 1944 when he was inducted into the US Army. Luckily the separation was short and after returning from his enlistment they purchased 1.2 acres of land on what is now known as Kyle’s Hill just outside of Barton where he built Eva & his family a permanent home. Happy Anniversary Uncle Alf & Aunt Eva!
