Today the House took action on two important fronts. We provided $47.8 billion to fund the Department of Homeland Security, and we voted to stop funds from being used to implement the President’s Executive Order granting legal status to over four million people in this nation unlawfully. The bill we passed includes $7 billion in emergency disaster funds to aid those parts of the country suffering from variously: extreme winter weather, rampant wildfires, floods and tornadoes. H.R. 240 fully funds Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and its 21,370 agents who provide security not only at our borders but also at our ports. It also addresses the recent spike in unaccompanied minors crossing our border by increasing the number of family detention units. We also address the pressing issue of preventing cyberattacks by directing $2.8 billion towards the National Protection and Programs Directorate. The money will be used to develop greater security against cyberthreats aimed at our nation’s infrastructure by enemies. This bill is a sensible, solid approach to ensuring our Homeland Security. It supports and funds vital security programs while also making it clear to President Obama that the Congress will stand up to his power grab and rein in an executive overreach that the President, himself, had previously acknowledged was not within his Constitutional authority. H.R. 240 passed by a vote of 236 to 191. #HomelandSecurity
