Today the ceremony for the 2014 ECHO Klassik Awards takes place in Munich. Eric Schulzs film The Second Life exploring the musical vision of Karajan has won DVD Recording of the Year. Talking about how he wanted to make a film that tries to avoid too much focus on the image of Karajan and instead deal with the subtleties of his art more profoundly than has been the case in other documentaries, Eric Schulz comments: “My solution was to build the story around Karajan´s work in the recording studio, where he spent more hours than any other musician ever. I hoped that this story, which sticks to Karajan‘s work and largely ignores his private life and character, would provide me with the necessary build-up to focus on his genius as a conductor. Furthermore I presented my archival footage with Karajan to my interviewees and filmed their comments while they were watching. By this unconventional non-academic way I believed to be able to present more expert-comments on musical aspects, than a more linear dramaturgy would have allowed. I hoped that this approach would in the end be informing as well as entertaining and am really happy that the film is being honored with the ECHO Klassik.“ The Second Life will be aired tomorrow, 27 October, on Classica at 13:25 CET and 21:25 CET.
