Today the funeral mass for Mario M Cuomo was celebrated at St Ignatius Loyola on the Upper East Side. I felt a kinship with the man who was so closely connected to the philosophers and theologians we both studied. And I loved it that he would occasionally let off a Latin expression in a parenthesis. Mirabile visu, it was, wonderful to see. When he mentioned Duns or Occam or Aquinas, it was with familiarity and seriousness of purpose-- he understood how the past informs the present. During the periods when there was suspense while he was deciding whether to run for President, people derided him as Hamlet on the Hudson, misunderstanding both the governor and the play. Now, though, I think of Hamlets remark to Horatio about his late father: I shall not look upon his like again.
