Today the news has been filled with more scaremongering from the NO campaign. This time coming from Keith Cochrane – Chief Executive Weir Group. He says that 131 business leaders have signed a letter casting doubts on the business plan for an independent Scotland saying it has failed and this causes uncertainties concerning currency regulation, the relationship with the EU, the freedom to trade freely across the rest of the UK, pensions and tax arrangements. He says that the uncertainties are bad for business. Now, I wonder if putting this list together was only his idea or if Lord George Robertson ( “forces of darkness” “cataclysmic”) had any say in it as he too is on the board of directors for the Weir Group Tony Banks – boss of Scotland’s largest independent care home provider, Balhousie takes the other point of view saying that we need independence because there is a fear of being pulled out of the EU and not having a say in the matter. This would undoubtedly affect all 2,500 Scottish businesses trading with Europe. He points out that the uncertainty has been created by the UK government and a lot of it could be sorted out with pre-independence negotiations but it suits their argument not to do so. He also, quite rightly points out that many of the names on the letter are NOT business owners, they are CEO’s and they have not put their own hard cash into the business but instead work in the chief executive corporate world and could quite happily move around the world from business to business. When you have a look at the board of directors of the Weir group, you can see they have worked in a multitude of businesses in executive positions. weir.co.uk/about-us/board/board-of-directors
