Today, throughout the day Ive been paying homage to my cousin, Marcia Frederick, Americas first female gymnast to win a gold medal (uneven bars) in Strasbourg, France in the world gymnastics championships in 1978. Two years earlier at the Montreal Summer Olympics, Nadia Comaneci of Romania took womens gymnastics to a new stratosphere with her perfect 10 on the uneven bars. Marcia will be the first to tell you, her performance my never be repeated by anyone. Heres a look back at that feat... She would go on to score six more perfect 10s en route to three gold medals at the age of 14.: Uneven bars, balance beam & all-around, plus a bronze in the floor exercise. Plus, Nadia helped Romania capture the silver for her team. And while Marcia Frederick won the gold in the uneven bars in Strasbourg in 1978, Nadia won gold for the balance team, a silver on the vault and silver for the team. In 1980 with the US boycotting the Moscow Olympics in 1980, Nadia won two more gold medals, balance beam & floor exercise... Two more segments tonight on Marcia Frederick & her rival/friend Nadia Comaneci, the latter particularly heartbreaking, but with a happy ending...
