Today was Graysons regular monthly clinic visit in Gainesville. All went well, G looks fabulous, got his antibiotic and chemo! We start steroids today for the remainder of the week. As I was anticipating this trip, I had a feeling Grayson would need an IVIG transfusion. He has had a runny nose and a cough for several weeks. Immunoglobulins (IVIG) are responsible for a portion of the immune system and more specifically, often assist in mucus related immunity. So pretty much, when he has a consistent runny nose and drainage, its a good sign that his immunoglobulins are low and he has little to fight it off with. Knowing this and knowing the transfusion takes a minimum of four hours, I called Shands on Monday morning and asked if I could get the labs drawn in Tallahassee so we would know ahead of time and we could get going right away on Thursday if we needed them. (That way we could still do it all in one day). Shands was in agreement and off we went to TMH. Well, turns out TMH cannot run that lab and sends it out to California. So, by the time we arrived at clinic today (three days later) the labs were not back yet. Shands drew labs at 1pm and by 4pm, we had the results and sure enough, G-man needs an IVIG transfusion. Yet, it was too late to start today. So, our clinic day has turned into an overnight trip for a transfusion in the morning. We check back into clinic at 8am and hopefully will get the ball rolling to be on the road by 1pm. However, as soon as he gets his IVIG, within 24 hours his runny nose and drainage usually dramatically improves. It is incredible how intricate our blood is and how it all works to help our body function and fight off any germs, viruses and such. I also find it crazy how they can separate our blood into each component and can give just what is necessary! The medical profession and knowledge blows my mind all the time. I have never been a science fan...ask my poor chemistry teacher in high school, but I have a new appreciation for it all over the past year! I also think often of the Master Creator who designed our bodies to the tiniest detail. Seriously, I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalm 139:14)
