Today was HOMECOMING at the Newland Presbyterian Church. We had one of the largest crowds I ever remember filling the sanctuary. Many friends and family that live away came to celebrate the 97th anniversary of the founding of the Newland Presbyterian Church. Descendants of some of the founding members still attend or returned this day. The Rev Bob Lowry, who served as our most recent interim minister, was invited back to deliver the sermon. Using Luke 19:1-10, the story of Jesus and Zaccheus the tax collector, he wove a message of how priorities of the sinner have to change, people need to be forgiven, and to make amends for their wrong doings. Luke, being a synoptic gospel, builds on the stories and teachings of Jesus, giving a summary of his life and works while here on earth. It is a part of the body of Christ and in those words though we see dimly as through a looking glass, the time will come when we will clearly, face to face. The choir special was a medley arrangement of Fanny Crosby hymns. One amazing thing is that in every hymn she alludes of seeing God or his work, yet she was blind from birth. Following the service we enjoyed a wonderful covered dish dinner in the fellowship hall. The room was filled and overflowing into the Sunday School rooms.
