Today was Tzu Chi US Headquarters annual winter relief distribution! Me and a couple other Tzu Chi volunteers who live in West LA went and picked up some 10 Bruin Tzu Chings (Tzu Chi collegiate volunteers) at UCLA at 7:45am this Saturday morning (today) and drove them to the Tzu Chi US headquarters to volunteer at this event. They were asked to help on a very short notice, and impressively, 10 of them agreed to take time from their busy college schedules and sacrifice an entire Saturday, and wake up early before 8 am, in.order to help out at the relief distribution and bring joy and love to the families living in poverty who will come to receive their winter relief aid. We arrived headquarters at 8:30am, they quickly got busy and helped set up the tents, the tables, table cloths, sort the supplies by category and size, prepare relief aid packs that include one 5 kilo instant rice bag, and even re-folding boxes of winter clothes that got wrinkled in storage. During the relief distribution, to show respect to the aid recipients, every one of them stood up to help each of the recipients the entire time, not one single person sat down for one second during the entirety of the distribution event. The aid recipients felt our love and respect, and kept thanking us, including the children, and we just thanked them back, for letting us help them, and for reminding us how blessed we are to still be able to help others. After standing and distributing relief supplies for hours to hundreds of needy recipients including parents, children and senior citizens, everyone was exhausted but very happy, a Saturday well-spent!
