Today was a Very Big Day! Mom came in to the hospital this - TopicsExpress

Today was a Very Big Day! Mom came in to the hospital this afternoon and saw a nurse in the hall who had cared for Declan last week. She said she couldnt wait for mom to see baby today, so mom knew something was up. Declan was due for an incubator swap, but his primary nurse was in today and decided to give an open crib a try, to see if he can keep himself warm and still gain weight. She dressed him and bundled him up pretty well, and for the first temperature check today, he was right on track! So far, so good. Mom had the first costume change today too, after Declan promptly soaked his pajamas during his diaper change. Seems like thats going to be a common occurrence... Anyhow, she managed to get him redressed with little trauma. Declan survived the experience, too. ;) He looks so much more like a baby, especially now that hes in clothes. His nurses have always said that Declan thinks hes bigger than he really is. Today, she commented that hes behaving so much like a term baby - which he pretty much is, at 38 weeks this weekend - strong muscles, feeding cues, and hearty cries. With todays milestone, that mostly leaves weight gain as the last remaining challenge before homecoming. He made haste in feeding by mouth nearly every time, which means his NG tube could conceivably stay out next time he yanks it out. He has been steadily gaining weight for the past two weeks, but the doctor is still concerned about his growth rate and wants to see him further up towards the growth curves. She said today that he has been making his own growth curve, which is about right - he has done just about *everything* in his own way since he came into being!
