Today was a bad day already from the morning, and when Sherif got - TopicsExpress

Today was a bad day already from the morning, and when Sherif got a phone call about a possible fracture, I knew it was about to get worse. This beautiful little filly was brought by a very concerned owner. Yesterday she was running outside, slipped and broke her leg underneath her shoulder. I knew immediately when I saw her that it was broken, and when Sherif gave the owner the sad news, he asked if we could put her to sleep. The owner held her and I stroked her neck and scratched her mane. Sherif gave the injection and she was gone immediately. Sherif told the owner he was sorry, but the owner replied This is not painful for me. But it was very painful to watch her struggle to get up and lie down. Of course he was upset to lose his foal, but it really touched me that he said that. She was such a beautiful little girl, with a beautiful soft coat. I sat with her and stroked her head until we took her away on the cart. I think she had a good life, although far too short, and her owner did the last thing he could for her. She is free of pain now. There will inevitably be people wondering why I took photos instead of cuddling the foal. I often take photos also of sad cases because I think the horses deserve to be remembered. In this particular case it was actually because the leg was so obviously broken. We had a case exactly like this in the summer, and it took days to put the horse to sleep because the person who brought it first wanted to amputate and then wanted x-rays. Sometimes it is very clear, even without x-rays, that the leg is not salvageable. (Marte)
