Today was a good day. I walked out into a gray dawn with streetlights still on and a full moon shining whitely overhead. The day was still with no sign of the usual wildlife although there were several duck trails on some lawns. The four ducks were back on the same lawn as yesterday, and I looked all over for the bunny, but in vain. When I got to the gravel path leading to the little gazebo, I stopped just before my foot hit the gravel because the smaller blue heron was at the edge of the water at the end of the lawn leading from the gravel path and perfectly framed between the two large bushes at the end of the path. I just stood and enjoyed watching it. Slowly it turned, step by step, and inched its way along the bank. Then it rose up and flew away, and I marveled at how it unfolds itself to launch into flight. As I left the gazebo and started back home, I got to see one little bunny between the houses where there had been two yesterday. As I walked along, I enjoyed watching the wispy gray clouds cross in front of the full moon which was still perfectly visible even in the brightening dawn. When I reached the big gazebo again, I caught a glimpse of the heron on the north bank near a covered deck at water’s edge. I watched it stalk along the fence away from the lake and wondered what it would find in the lawn to satisfy it. The Goose family were climbing out of the lake onto the bank near the gazebo. Some of the goslings are almost indistinguishable from the parents. I’m sure it won’t be long before the “little ones” become independent. At the last corner as I headed for home, I looked across the street and saw another little brown bunny in the middle of a lawn, making itself at home and unafraid of my passing by. At one point on the walk, there were sprinklers doing their job, and as I started onto that part of the sidewalk, I realized I had misjudged their arcs and would have to pick up the pace or receive the full blast of one of them right in my face. So I ran. I ran! I couldn’t believe it! I just picked up and ran out of its reach. Now, granted, it was only the space of some six sidewalk squares, and those of you who run would perhaps have called it merely a jog. But I’m saying it was running because there were times that both my feet were off the ground at the same time. I can’t remember the last time I was able to do that! And my knee didn’t give out on me, and the pain wasn’t any worse than it has been. And now it’s got me thinking that maybe one day I will really be able to run again. What a thought! How gracious the Lord has been in restoring my health! As we go into a Happy New Day, consider the work the Lord is continuing to do in your life. “Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” Isaiah 40:30-31
