Today was a good day. It started a little oddly as I woke up to a house with no power. It made me appreciate the gray dawn light that came in through the windows. It was dark enough outside with no street lights on that I decided I would walk later in the day, so I went back to sleep for about an hour. And then, since I didn’t know how long the power had been out, I didn’t want to take a chance on opening the refrigerator. So instead of nice cold filtered water, I drank room temperature tap water and had a peanut butter sandwich instead of eggs and oatmeal and milk for breakfast. The water was still hot enough for a shower, but since I didn’t know how long it would last, I took the fastest shower I’ve taken in a long, long time! My real concern was how I was going to get my hair dry, but the power was restored just in time for me to do that and make it to church on time. I was very glad that I had gone ahead and ironed my dress the night before! As I reflected on the differences between this morning and most other mornings, I realized how many “first-world problems” I could have whined about. I couldn’t help thinking about the countless number of people around the world who would be glad simply to have clean water to drink or bathe in, never mind what temperature it was, or to have anything to eat at all or to have access to any electricity at any time for anything. How rich we are in this country! How much we take for granted! As we go into a Happy New Day, let us be aware of how richly God has blessed us and let us look for ways to ease another’s burden.
