Today was a good day. The dawn sky was dark grey, filled with clouds that made me move a little quickly lest I be caught in a downpour. No rain materialized while I walked, though, and there was enough of a breeze to combat the humidity. The streetlights were still on all the way down to the little gazebo, but they started winking out as the sky lightened with the rising sun. At the first inlet I was surprised by a heron stalking along the near shore. I stopped quickly, but it took leisurely flight to the shore 90 degrees to my right. The morning light was so grey that the heron was discernible only as a smudge of light grey-blue chalk against the shore line. The Goose family was steaming along the lake toward the big gazebo, no longer swimming in longboat formation but rather as a companionable cluster. As I returned from the little gazebo, they had made their way to a lawn at the corner of the spillway and were performing their morning grooming. I met my friend Jewel and we walked together for a bit. It was nice to have a companion for a short while. Clayton and Annette came over for dinner this evening, and it was lovely to have their company. It’s always good to catch up with family. And Sara Prince left me a message saying that she had talked with someone at Auburn about me. I’m surprised that they began checking my references so soon. I’m taking that as a positive! There is so much to be thankful for in every day, but we rarely see it if we’re not looking. As we go into a Happy New Day, let’s be on the lookout for the blessings that abound.
