Today was a powerful and insightful day as Matthew Ballentine, one of the Chillicothe City School Districts top administrators, delivered an outstanding overview of Dr. Stephen Coveys Seven Habits of Highly Effective People to new employees. Heres a brief synopsis of each habit that is designed to improve both your personal and professional effectiveness. 1. Be proactive or take the initiative to get things done . 2. Start with the end in mind or think of how youd like to be remembered on your 80th birthday. In other words, have a vision and think about what youd like to accomplish with your life. 3. Prioritize or put first things first in your life. Dont allow your life to be dictated to by the tyranny of the urgent. 4. Think win-win. Think about whats good for others and for you. In other words, even when you lose, what did you learn when you were in the situation that you might use to your benefit next time?5.Seek first to understand then to be understood. When someone has an issue, show some empathy by just listening instead of being quick to respond. Sometimes your friends or colleagues just need a sympathetic ear. 6.Synergy- Figure out how to work together in a collaborative fashion with others. 7. Sharpen the saw or just take some time for yourself to grow, develop and learn a little bit more. Thats what I did today and I learned a lot. Perhaps one of the days most profound statements lies in this quote that Dr. Covey discovered when he was conducting research on the character and the personality ethic. Between the stimulus(that which happens to you) and the response(your reaction to what happens to you) theres a space and in that space is where your decision is made as to how you respond. So keep this powerful observation in mind. You always have a choice as to how you are going to respond. That is quite an epiphany! See what you can do about applying it to your life or not. I know I will. Thank you Mr. Ballentine for a very informative and outstanding presentation. :) Doc
