Today was an unexpected sucker punch to the feels. Had some business in Clearwater to tend to this afternoon, from Hudson to Tarpon Springs US 19 was lined with officers from all across the state to honor their fallen brother Officer Charles Kondek. It seems since Eric Garner and Michael Brown incidents, most want to blame officers for everything. Dont trust the police. Police use too much brutal force. Police officers are racist. In my life, I have only ever met ONE officer who could be considered a bad apple and I know A LOT of people in law enforcement (this is including my personal interactions with officers whether I broke the law, I was a victim or I was simply mis-profiled). A recent conversation I had with a friend in law enforcement made the enlightening comment that Officers are only ONE part of the judicial system, they are the ones who catch those in the act. They are not judge, jury and executioner (or slimy defense lawyers). Criminals are judged by a jury of their peers; remember that time you were called for jury duty but made up an excuse to get out of it? Uh huh, that was your chance to put your voice to use. It seems most forget that underneath that uniform is a father, mother, husband, wife, brother, sister - they are a person, just like you. They are doing their job; a job which they sacrifice so much for all to protect you, your family and your friends. If you dont want to tango with the mean ole police officer, STOP BREAKING THE LAW. Dont get mad at them because they caught you speeding, dont get upset because they question you if you look suspicious and dont get angry because you were questioned and ended up providing enough information to warrant further investigation. Educate yourself, do you know what your rights are? If not, it is up to you to learn them - not for the officers to spell them out for you. Ignorance is not bliss, it is a lame excuse to not apply or educate yourself. RIP Officer Charles Kondek. Remember #BlueLivesMatter because #ALLLivesMatter.
