Today was going to be a busy day for me, I was supposed to take a friend to Columbia. But she wasnt up to it so I decided to run a few much needed errands and visit with some old friends. Its been a good day I guess one might say. However, when talking about old friends, I was told that one of my dearest and best friends recently passed from lung cancer. His name is Dennis Hall and he was from Kentucky but moved to Greenville in the 70s. He was among the welcoming crew when I landed back in Greenville to live with my brother Tikie. It was party central between the mobile homes that he and my brother lived in. There were three trailers. in the first one Dennis and Gary Joe lived in. Tikie and myself in the middle one and my cousin Larry Jordan in the rear. I had never lived in a trailer before and it was an eye opening experience. It was so small that you could sit on the toilet and turn the tub water on while brushing your teeth and never have to move. And it was pink to say the least. There wasnt a place in the whole trailer that did not creek when you walked. The freezer had no door when you opened the fridge. There was a 3/4 bed that I slept on and then there was the living room. I could never quite pin point the odor that the trailer had. So one day Dennis and I took the furniture out on the small front lawn and scrubbed everything down. Even the walls in the house we used bleach and comet and sprayed the walls down too. I found a gallon pickle jar that has what looked like ashes in it and found that that was the smell that I was smelling. So I threw it in the dumpster. By that evening, everything was dry and put back in its place and Dennis and I went out to dinner that night and we were proud of our accomplishment. However, when we returned, a few minutes later Tikie came in and he was very impressed with the cleanness of the trailer. After looking over everything he me Where are the roaches? I told him that I did not see the first bug of any kind while we were cleaning. Then he said No, my ROACHES? Again I assured him there were not any roaches in the place. He then went over to where I found that gallon pickle jar and said Where is the jar that sit here? I scuffed and said that those were stinking so bad that I threw them away. Tikie got very excited and wanted to know what I did with them. Dennis just sit there cracking up laughing so hard. I told him I threw them in the dumpster. Dennis laughed even harder and said Man I didnt know. I have never seen Tikie run so fast to a dumpster in my life. He dove right in that thing and retrieved that stinking jar of what I found out was little bitty pot ends. I had no idea but was given a quick lesson. Since he was able to retrieve them I was forgiven. But I will never forget that day that Dennis and I had such fun cleaning. Nor will I ever forget going to his hometown in Kentucky and pulling my car in the creek and washing my car and stopping on winding mountain roads to play in the river that ran beside it. And the many lesson of life that Dennis taught me. He loved me and I knew it and he showed it, but it was a different time and place and I could only love him as a friend. A dear friend that I will miss very much. He died three weeks ago surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren. It pained my heart when I was told today of his passing. But then I thought of him and my brother together again, laughing and cutting up. And that lifted my heart. Dennis Hall...you was a friend of mine. Rest in peace my friend.
