Today was interesting. First I would like to thank Chief Rose and Councilors Devin, Rod, Mike, Lafatts & Lonnie for enabling people of our community to attend the Children Dieing In Care Rally today and the intent behind those who organized it. It is agreed by all that fn children dieing in government foster care should NEVER happen. Yet It Is. Canadians NEED to made aware of whats going on and why. FN CHILDREN are NOT HOSTAGES and their PARENTS are NOT CRIMINALS. This is a system the government created to replace the Indian Residential School system in 1966-69. It needs a major over-haul. There is a social need to help families struggling canada wide. HELP THEM. STOP PENALIZING THEM! I sat, I stood, I walked and I listened today and I took everything in. I also took my children. They need to become better involved in what ultimately does and will continue to affect their lives. What I liked about it is this was a Treaty 6-8 united front for leadership to be working with their people directly; not behind them or around them or ignoring them. That was very positive. What I disliked about today was the colonial structure used by our very own knowledgable leaders/advocates. It started with a hierarchy line up, from officials to children last in tow. After the walk begun they realized this was about the children and invited them to the front line. Great. slowly but surely they are getting it. Next when asked a direct question from the crowd, they were told to not ask questions, made their excuses as to why and the subject was forgotten. AFN reps and officials NEED TO BE guided and held as accountable as our FN leaders needed to be. DO NOT LET THEM OFF THE HOOK when they finally meet a crowd of grassroots who deserve to know what their AFN resolutions and mandates mean or affect us grassroots people. If an AFN rep can not answer such questions, they do not deserve to be representing the AFN nor the grassroots people in general. Yes we do have a traditional way of life with guiding values and principles so lets stop using the colonial ways period. Its not a fn customary way to cut people short, so stop doing it. Especially to your own people. I wish we could have taken more people. I wish our people would take a more active role in their own destinies period. I liked most of what was said and especially agreed with what Chief Rose said...is it also OUR RESPONSIBILITY to take charge and take care of our own. So tomorrow I am going to put my leaderships ideas to the test here on reserve. I am going to go to my local offices and ask yet again for program policies and leadership directives that affect me and my childrens lives here. Time to put your money where your mouths are guys. Or as my mama likes to say the proof is in the pudding. hiy hiy.
