Today was my first visit to Surigao City since February 1997. It was great to be back. As a tourleader of Baobab Travel I came here often between 1995 and 1997. Surigao City was the jump-off point for our three day/two night island hopping tour, organised by the local tourist office under the management of Mrs. Cherla Tibay. Cherla is now retired but I was welcomed at the tourist office as an old friend. Very, very touching. They remembered the Baobab groups and they even remarked that I didn’t have “golden” hair in 1997. That observation is correct although my hair is more white/grey than golden…. Our overnight places are not there anymore. We used to camp at Sagisi Island but that is now a private island. The tourist house on Zaragoza Island has been destroyed during typhoon Yolanda last year. Surigao City hasn’t changed that much. Traffic is still mainly tricycles and the people are still as friendly as back then. I didn’t see a single Western tourist downtown. The Tavern Hotel has a new wing and is much nicer as it was in 1997 although I also liked it at that time. It was great to be back! #authenticphilippines #philippines #surigao #caraga
