Today was one of those days when the empty bar felt heavy and everything lacked strength and spark. On days like this I lift with one aim: make the reps, regardless of how bad they feel. These lifts are between 80 and 90% of my maximum. However, making these percentages on a day like this the aim is not to increase your maximum, but to increase your minimum. ie the weight you could lift at 3am if someone kicked you out of bed and told you to compete there and then. (Im not willing to attempt that experiment). After all, you are very likely at some point to turn up on competition day feeling like a sack of shit, and having a maximum of 130kg is irrelevant if you cant hit 100kg on a bad day.
