Today was sort of a rare deal for me. I went upstairs to refill my pitcher of water, then I mentioned a news story to my dad and somehow we wound up outside, talking for 2 hours about Americas economy, general politics, and how I was so amazed at how things like the computer came to be invented when the idea previously did not exist. Hell, Im even amazed that somebody thought to throw ingredients together for cake mix and discovered at what temperature liquid batter becomes solid cake before cake existed. I kept asking all these questions and I felt kinda proud that my dad was smart enough to be able to answer most of them since they pertained to his job. We discussed solar power and nuclear power for a solid 30 minutes then my all over the place mind was like, Can you show me how to work our grill? And he did. You might think this wasnt such a big deal, but I barely know my dad and Ive lived with him for roughly 20 years. Its very very unusual for me to be able to get him to have a good long conversation. When I talk to him and hear his views on the world, his reasoning, I feel a little more confident in my own abilities since I share his DNA. While hes got his flaws, he has admirable traits that I try to incorporate into my life, like keeping an overall level head and logically trying to think through problems. Were both Do-it-yourself kind of people, among other similar traits. I feel bad that hes 60 years old with all the wisdom hes acquired over the years and that I havent really been able to learn as much as Id like to from him. Time feels like its running out.
