Today was the best day of camp! Piece of Paradise Farm is a working farm, not just a camp, and we have learned that no two days are the same! This morning when we got to camp Dr. Tony Rodriguez was at the farm. Dr Tony is the vet that takes care of the horses on the farm. Our counselors come to camp early and today they were going to ride their horses before camp. Ruby, Mackenzie’s horse spooked herself, she fell and split her lip. Julianne knew that it was important to have the vet out because Ruby needed stitches. Dr. Tony came out, cleaned Ruby’s cut and we watched him stitch her up. Ruby did not mind at all. Dr. Tony made it painless for her. That was an interesting way to start our camp day! After we fed our horses, we groomed them and tacked them up for our lesson. The faster we groomed and tacked up the longer our lesson was! Some of the horses were really muddy and we had extra work to get them clean. It was a great ride. We were good at spacing and steering. We worked on pace and positions in the saddle. We understand that we need to sit tall and watch our shoulder and leg position so we are balanced in the saddle. We had an extra long ride and all of us improved! We all are different riding levels and we watch each other ride so we can learn from each other! Julianne explains what she is telling each other rider so we all can learn. After we rode and took care of our horses it was time for lunch, and we were starving! Today we helped clear the jumps out of the ring for our afternoon ride. In arts and crafts we painted wooden and bead horse door hangers. We were excited to ride for our afternoon lesson. Again, the faster we tacked up, the faster we could ride! It was easier to tack up this afternoon because our horses were resting in their stalls and stayed clean. In our afternoon lesson we worked on pace and skills. We worked on going over ground poles walking and trotting in 2 point. We had to steer carefully to the center of the poles so our horses knew what we were asking them to do! We also worked on communicating with our horses with our speech and our bodies. We had to tell our horses to ‘stop in the box’. We rode up to a box and had to stop in the middle of the box. It is harder than it sounds!
