Today we again raise the flag. At least 5 Minnesotans have been killed due to domestic violence in 2014. Michelle Ploetz, 20, of Saint Paul, was fatally shot in the head by her boyfriend, Timothy Hendricks, 19, on Wednesday, April 16, 2014. The couples 8-month-old son and Michelles father, John Ploetz, were also present at the scene. According to the criminal complaint, Hendricks was charged in Ramsey County District Court with shooting and killing Michelle, and attempting to kill her father, as her father drove them and their baby home after dinner on Saint Pauls East Side. The charges came after Ploetz, a Cretin-Derham Hall graduate and St. Catherine University student, was taken off life support at Regions Hospital on Friday and died as a result of the gunshot wound to the head. A criminal complaint says Hendricks was riding in an SUV with Ploetz, their 8-month-old son, and Ploetzs father after they had gone to dinner. Hendricks and Ploetz had been arguing about him spending time with the child when he allegedly pulled a gun and shot her in the head. The victims father, John Ploetz, was driving the vehicle. He pulled over after hearing what he described as pops from the back seat, and then saw something fly by his head and shatter the windshield. John Ploetz jumped out of the truck to try to wrestle the gun away from Hendricks, but the teen kept shooting at him. Ploetz tells police he fled on foot as Hendrick chased him with the gun. Michelle Ploetz was rushed to Regions Hospital, where she eventually died from her injuries. Responding officers went searching for Hendricks, and learned that he was heading for Regions hospital. They found him there and arrested him. He was charged with one count of second-degree murder in the death of Michelle Ploetz, and one count of second-degree attempted murder of her father, 45-year-old John Ploetz. At the time of the homicide, Hendricks was out on a conditional jail release for a January charge that he pointed a rifle at his 13-year-old nephew.
