Today, we are launching a pangolin public service announcement (PSA) that will be broadcast on over 50 television channels across Vietnam. This would not have been possible without the valuable support of CNN readers, ENV supporters, and the generosity of our Vietnamese media partners (national TV, provincial TV, VTV Cab, An Vien TV and VTC Digital) for committing to air the film. The PSA features popular news anchor Hoai Anh, who calls on the Vietnamese public to report any pangolin crimes and to recognize that “if you buy pangolin scales or eat pangolin meat in restaurants, you are directly supporting these criminal networks.” Between 2012 and the end of 2014, ENV documented more than 34.3 tons of frozen pangolins and pangolin scales seized by authorities in Hai Phong alone. There is still much more we need to do in Vietnam to increase the public’s awareness of the plight of this endangered animal. We hope that this pangolin PSA will both encourage people to report pangolin crimes, as well as reduce the demand and the market for pangolins. The Vietnamese New Year period often corresponds with an increase in the demand for pangolin products, so this PSA will serve as a timely reminder to the community that the consumption or trade in pangolins is both illegal and morally repugnant.
