Today we are looking at the world’s heaviest recorded fleece. It was hoped that the 6 year old merino ram, Shaun, recently found wondering in Tasmania (you might have seen it on the news) just this month would break the record for the world’s heaviest fleece. The record of 27kg had been set by our cousins across the Tasman in NZ in 2004 by the famous ovine wether Shrek who also had managed to evade capture for 6 years. After 20 minutes of shearing Shaun’s fleece was removed and weighed in at an impressive 23.5kg but a little shy of the record. This compares to an average merino fleece that typically weighs in at 4.5kg! So what and how much can you make from all this wool? Well assuming a 60% yield then we are looking at around 114 scarves or 36 jumpers or 18 men’s suits. Now that’s a lot! Photos of Shaun and Shrek (pre and post shearing) are attached
