Today we can celebrate the ever delightful Marion Davies. She started as a Ziegfeld girl and met her stage door johnny who happened to be the last of those legendary rich stage door johnny types, William Randolph Hearst. Even without Hearst to back her films when she moved to Hollywood, she was a vastly talented comedienne, equally adept at drama. Hearst liked her in straight roles, dramatic, costume pictures. She was fine in them, but it was under the direction of King Vidor she really hit her stride in the late 1920s in The Patsy (my favorite) and Show People in which she truly shined. Shes also wonderful and touching in Peg O My Heart and Quality Street. She made the transition to the talkies just fine and continued on through the late 1930s before retiring. She was a hostess with the mostest at Hearts Castle on the hill (Hearst Castle) and her Ocean Beach House in Santa Monica. Her Beverly Hills mansion also hosted parties and guests from Valentino and Pola Negri to Sinatra. She was always a delight to me, one of my favorites.
