Today, we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The Berlin Wall was one of the most despicable markers of the division caused by Cold War. It was the symbol of hatred, of pretentiousness and of pride all done in the name of ideology. As the Berlin Wall fell, families were reunited, communities were restored and not only Germany but the entire world was reunited. With the destruction of the Communist way of living, the end of the Cold War was a significant step towards the end of blatant repressive authoritarian regimes all around the world. However, twenty-five years forward, much has still to be done. In Germany alone for instance, the economic, social, political and cultural conditions in the East remain to be below of the West. Economic and social inequality remains to be the greatest challenge towards the maintenance of the Post-Cold War system. If the capitalist way of living continues to ignore the plight of the poor and the powerless while strengthening the rich and powerful, as it is today, then we might say that the Victory effected by the Fall of the Berlin Wall is all in vain, and a new Cold War may not be a distant possibility as it should be. As citizens of the Free World, let us strive to continue and finish the work first started by the Fall of the Wall towards the full enjoyment of any citizen of the world of his unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Let us end the hypocrisy of praising the Fall of the Wall without aiding the affected peoples the restoration of their individual and communal dignity. Finally, let us renew our allegiance to democracy, to liberty and to freedom for it is only through its full and actual attainment that the potentialities of the individual and the community are cared for and progressed.
