Today we celebrate the anniversary of the arrival of Christopher - TopicsExpress

Today we celebrate the anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas on October 12, 1492. New York City, with its great diversity and ties to many foreign countries, was one of the first U.S. cities to celebrate Columbus Day when festivities were held in 1792 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of his landing in the New World. This holiday is recognized all over the world: as Columbus Day in the U.S, Día de la Raza in many Latin American countries, Discovery Day in the Bahamas, Día de la Hispanidad and Fiesta Nacional in Spain, as Día del Respeto a la Diversidad Cultural in Argentina, as Día de las Américas in Belize and Uruguay, and as Giornata Nazionale di Cristopher Columbus or Festa Nazionale di Cristopher Columbus in Italy and Little Italy neighborhoods everywhere. It is important for us to understand that the discovery of the Americas by Columbus, and the accomplishments of other explorers like him, make our current way of life possible. We can follow their example in our daily lives by taking risks, exploring new possibilities, and discovering something new about yourself and your world today. Happy Columbus Day,
