Today we celebrate the ratification of the Constitution. This - TopicsExpress

Today we celebrate the ratification of the Constitution. This document is unique from all other governing documents in that the express purpose is to limit the government. Rather than exhaustively listing every conceivable right and privilege the citizens possess, like most constitutions of the day and today, the founders took a vastly different approach. The founders realized that they could never accurately list every right and privilege man possesses and such a list would always leave holes for government to control the people. Instead, the decided to write a shorter list. The Constitution is a list of powers the federal government is granted by the states and the people. Any power not listed in the Constitution is left to the states or the people. The intent and effect of this Constitution was to limit and restrict the federal government and prevent usurpation of the states and the people. In our federal republic (not democracy), the power flows from the people, to the states and then to the federal government. People, recognizing the need for a government to establish order and provide justice, granted some limited power to the states. Similarly, following the War for Independence, the states granted vastly limited power to the federal government to establish some unity among the states. Over the last 100 years, we have slowly allowed greedy and power hungry politicians in Washington, DC to seize power to the point where the Constitution and our republic have been turned on their heads. People have forgotten that the power of self-governance is their right and belongs to them and, in fact, believe that they only have power that the federal government allows them to have. On this Constitution Day, take a few minutes and read it. Have a great day everyone!
