Today we celebrated our 173rd birthday under the theme “Intelligent cities, moving forward”, with a special seminar at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment in the morning and the official ceremony in the afternoon. MORNING Ten TU Delft researchers gave a pitch on their work and Anthony Townsend addressed the topic of smart cities during the keynote lecture. The other speakers, professor Andy Dobbelsteen (Professor at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment) and professor Geert-Jan Houben (Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Sciences) talked about climate design and sustainability and the science of social data. AFTERNOON In the afternoon the audience enjoyed a movie with the highlight of our university in 2014 before Rector Magnificus Karel Luyben welcomed the audience. Next, professor Arjan van Timmeren, addressed the Aula Auditorium during his Foundation Day Lecture. He started off with a question: “Intelligent Cities are the answer, but what is the question?” He also stressed the importance of constant innovation and modelling. After a reflection on the morning program, the floor was given to Anthony. He addressed the advancing role of engineers in building inclusive smart cities. The Senior Research Scientist at New York University was given an honorary doctorate today. Professor Houben handed over the certificate, afterwards which his co-promotor Professor Van den Dobbelsteen honoured Anthony Townsend and his work. Dirk-Jan van den Berg delivered a speech on behalf of the TU Delft on “Intelligent Urbanism and the Institute for Advanced Metropolian Solutions – AMS”, but not without linking it to the actuality. Afterwards, it was already time to close the ceremony with a spectacular act of ‘The Flag Man’ Domique Lacasse. All people present in the Aula Auditorium received the book ‘Ubiquity & the Illuminative City. From Smart to Intelligent Urban Environments’ written by Arjan van Timmeren.
