Today we had the misfortune of landing up for a play called Bhamasha on Rana Partaps trusted lieutenant and financier Bhamasha at Prithvi. Directed by Mr. Manoj Shah and written by one Mr. Mihir Bhuta (the internet appears to refer to another version written by Dr. Bipin Doshi, though directed by the same person) - this piece of drivel chose to pick on the most secular of Mughal emperors- Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar. While, unlike the ultra Hindu Right, I do not believe in banning ideas and books, and subscribe to the opinion that I may not agree with what you say, but I shall defend to death your right to say it - it was outrageous to see a portrayal of Akbar as a religious bigot who referred to Hindus as Kafirs and had Ulema styled facial hair (not that I find anything wrong with that), when it is well-documented by portrait painters of that time that he had a moustache and not a beard. The last straw was when Jodha kicked an inebriated Akbar on his backside. And no, these nincompoops were not trying to do comedy. The half time came as a much-needed and long-awaited respite, and we made a dash for the exit, since I had had enough of it. While this did not take away anything from the tale of a valorous Rana and his self-sacrificing friend, brother-in-arms and financier, these nitwits managed to turn it into a travesty. But in the fast approaching Golden Land of Hindutva (quick, pass the lime, so that I can keep a straight face), maybe we should brace ourselves for more of this kind of nonsense ?
