Today, we hear the tragic news about the two assassinated NYPD officers. Many of those protesting the recent incidents of brutality by law enforcement will gloat, and engage in inflammatory rhetoric against police...making the situation worse. And, many in law enforcement will defend policies that assume every citizen is a potential threat, and use this tragedy as justification for more excessive use of force...making the situation worse. If you are a protester who believes that anyone wearing a badge deserves a bullet in the head, then you are the same as the cops who profile you for the neighborhood you live in or the color of your skin. If you are a law enforcement officer who believes that your personal safety is more important than the lives and rights of the people you are sworn to protect, then maybe you should have been an accountant...not a cop. Sadly, the terms being used on both sides are the language of war. When observed from a historical perspective, this has many of the traits of a prelude to war. The solution is simple: Everyone stand down. Earn respect by showing respect for the lives and rights of the opposing side. That is the only way we will prevent a new era of violence in America.
