Today we honor political scientist and ΦBK member Ralph Bunche born on this day in 1904. Bunche was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1950 for his successful role as UN mediator in the negotiations that led to the 1949 Armistice Agreements between Israel and its four Arab neighbors—Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon. Bunche was the first person of color ever recognized with a Nobel Prize. After graduating summa cum laude and class valedictorian from UCLA in 1927 and receiving his doctorate in political science from Harvard University, Bunche founded the Political Science Department at Howard University, Washington, District of Columbia. There he served as a professor and department chair from 1928-1941 before he moved to government service with U.S. Department of State. Ralph Bunche is considered by many to be a founding father of the United Nations for his work drafting its charter and serving as Secretariat and later Under Secretary for Special Political Affairs. howard.edu/rjb/opportunities/Default.htm #tbt #becausePBK
