Today we honor you and salute you for defending our country and our freedom. Honor & Remember Our American Hero SSG Zachary A Darras US Army Hometown: Tahlequah, Oklahoma Gold Star Mother Debra Lafon~ Zachary was a unique wonderful and interesting young man.......the army was good for him. He found out his capabilities and his strengths. He demanded perfection from his men and from his fellow soldiers and commanders....he knew if things were not done right lives could be lost.....he cared for the Iraqi people and worried when he left them behind. He made everyone laugh, and made difficult situations bearable. He was creative and talented. He was smart! He discovered how much he loved his family. He was an example and a friend. He was my little boy and my life is not complete without him. We all miss him every minute of every day . He served two tours in Iraq, 2007-2008 as part of the surge for 15 long months them in 2009-2010 as part of the last combat troops in Iraq...that tour was 12 months long. He died shortly after returning. Thankfully he was able to visit home and had planned the greatest Christmas ever!!!! We only wish he had lived to fulfill that dream. We were notified of his death on Christmas morning 2010. This is a very tender time of year for us. Zachary is the youngest of 5 children. His father died when Zac was yong, Jeremy who died at the age of 26 in 1997, Malan, Benjamin, Rachel are his brothers and sisters. He also grew up with his nephew Malan C .....Rachels son. My grandson has always lived with me and grew up with Zachary.....they are more like brothers. They were very close. In fact Zachary adored this kid. Malan C has missed him. He was always so funny and kept us laughing. I’ve been told in Iraq when the going got rough Zac kept spirits high. His commander said when he came in the office in the mornings he would yell out “Keep Up the Fire” at the top of his lungs and then they knew the day was off and running. He was a musician, loved to learn, and really loved to run…it didn’t come easy for him, but in the end he could out run everyone…He loved his family and especially his nephew who he grew up with. We miss him terribly every single minute of every single day. ~ Debra Lafon SSG Zachary A Darras 25, died December 12, 2010 while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom from non-combat related cause.
