Today we honour a hero of another kind. Youve heard all about the famous ones - Seabiscuit, Secretariat, War Admiral and so on...but have you heard of this decorated military heroine of all time? A Korean war horse called, Reckless - named as one of Americas 100 greatest heroes of all time! A chestnut Mongolian mare, bought for $250 by Lt. Eric Pederson from a young Korean boy (Kim Huk Moon) at the Seoul Race Track. She became a Marine on October 26, 1952. She was BELOVED by the Marines and even honoured and promoted twice with the title of Staff Sergeant at Camp Pendleton, firstly in 1957 by Col. Richard Rothwell and then again in 1959 by the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps, General Randolph McCall Pate. The Marines took care of her better than they took care of themselves – often throwing their flak jackets over her to protect her when incoming was heavy, risking their own safety. She even has her own website where you can go to read more about her with her favourite foods being listed as scrambled eggs, Hershey Bars and candy (tch, tch, naughty naughty!!) and her favourite pastime is listed as drinking with her Marine buddies. She is remembered mostly by her Marine buddies as having quite the appetite for anything and everything!! This video gave us goosebumps and brought tears to our eyes at the part where she was honoured by her Marine mates at the ceremony for her.
