Today, we in the United States of America celebrate the birthday - TopicsExpress

Today, we in the United States of America celebrate the birthday of our country - the day we officially separated from the then Kingdom of Great Britain for a whole host of reasons. Some you may not be aware of, He (King George III) has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.; He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their Public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.; and He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies without the Consent of our legislatures.. There was much more than tea and taxes behind it! Our Declaration of Independence was signed on July 4th, 1776 - forming a country of a mere thirteen colonies. In a scant 238 years, weve grown to fifty states, become a world economic and military superpower, and have seen 44 presidents come; 43 of them go. The Roman Empire had around 525 years in the West, and 1475 years in the East. Compared to other civilizations in the world - those still among us and those who are long gone - we are still but an infant in comparison! Where will we be in another 287 years? Thats for us to decide. Just remember to look back at where weve gone before looking ahead to plot where well go next. Have a safe and happy 4th, whatever your religious or political beliefs are.
