Today, we know the Salvation Army as a wonderful organization that does great things for people all around the world. Every story, however, has its beginnings. “The Salvation Army began in 1865 when William Booth, a London minister, gave up the comfort of his pulpit and decided to take his message into the streets where it would reach the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute.” While Booth’s mission was spiritual, he recognized the every day needs of people, and since the time he established the Salvation Army, their services now include hospitals, shelters, nurseries and well-priced thrift stores to help the less fortunate. Founder’s Day is celebrated on William Booth’s birthday, in remembrance of his creation of an organization that continues to aid the suffering today. Since 1940, Founders day has NOT actually been celebrated on Booth’s birthday. It is celebrated on 2nd July – the date on which Booth held his first tent meeting in Whitechapel. In a sense the 2nd of July is the ‘birthday’ of The Salvation Army. HAPPY FOUNDERS DAY
