Let us know which story you like best, and add your own stories about working with USAID! Impact #10: Land Reform in Tajikistan. In Tajikistan, all land is owned by the government and farmers are granted land use rights. If farmers own secure land use rights, they have the freedom to grow more diverse, nutritious, and profitable crops, instead of mandatory production of unprofitable cotton. In 2014, USAID established 12 new legal aid centers in rural farming districts and helped extend land rights to over 21,000 farmers. In 2012, USAID helped pass amendments to the land code that granted farmers the right to buy, sell, mortgage and transfer land rights, increasing farmers’ land security. Through the 12 legal aid centers, USAID is helping to educate farmers about recent land reforms and protect family rights to land they have been farming in some cases for several generations.
