Today we lost a dear friend. His story is one I need to share. Obie was a senior, long time resident of the Southside SPCA. As a young dog he suffered from severe separation anxiety and a fear of storms that caused him to be returned by adopters, time and time again. We finally resolved that he would live with us. Years passed and Obie spent his days with his shelter family. He was happy....but such a devoted soul longed for more. An opportunity arose for me to accompany my daughter on her class field trip to visit an assisted living facility....I of course wanted to bring a shelter dog along! Obie was an easy and obvious choice. He was so well mannered and could bring joy to many (see photo). It was during this time that I took Obie home and realized that time had helped cure many of the issues from his youth. I started to have hope that Obie may just find a home after all. It didnt take long for Debbie Weightman Reppucci to see Obies photo and agree. The fact that she lived in New England didnt matter (in fact this was not her first adoption of a long time resident!). So, with the help of our friends from Sterling Animal Shelter, we arranged for Obie to hitch a ride on the next transport up north! For a blissful year and a half Obie new what true love and belonging was all about. He not only had a loving family with two four legged brothers, he had unconditional love. For that we are forever grateful. Some may think its sad he only had that period of time in a home, but to us, we know that Obie lived in the moment. And boy was that moment sweet! Many thanks to the Reppucci family for saving a senior...for knowing it was never about quantity, but always about quality. For that I will always be thankful.
